Now is the time... "Now is the time for one last look around this beautiful campus… All around us are giant majestic trees," began engineering major Andrew Houck, as he delivered the valedictory address at Princeton's 253rd Commencement on May 30.
He observed that, during droughts, the groundskeepers know that "older trees have deep enough roots that they can draw water from well below the dry surface. It is the young trees that are nurtured by this University. We all have benefited from this practice; the University and everyone around us have nurtured us until our roots grew deep enough for us to sustain ourselves."
A total of 1,730 degrees were awarded at Commencement: 934 bachelors of arts and 171 bachelors of science in engineering, 344 masters degrees, and 281 PhDs. The ceremony also included an address by President Shapiro, as well as the awarding of prizes for excellence in teaching to Princeton faculty members (Oliver Arnold, Peter Brown, Amy Gutmann and Howard Taylor), graduate student assistants in instruction (Virgil Moorefield, John Naud, Roman Shimanovich, Kimberlee Weaver and Andromache Karanika) and N.J. secondary school teachers (Agnes Colaneri, Julius Gottilla, Gerald Lamb and Linda Penney).
