Professor Glassman Elected to National Academy of Engineering

Princeton, N.J.--Irvin Glassman, Princeton University's Robert H. Goddard Professor of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering in the School of Engineering and Applied Science, was elected a member of the National Academy of Engineering in February. Election to the Academy is among the highest professional distinctions accorded an engineer. Membership honors those who have made "important contributions to engineering theory and practice," and to those who have demonstrated "unusual accomplishment in the pioneering of new and developing fields of technology."

Glassman was cited for his contributions as researcher, author, editor, and educator, who established a school of combustion and propulsion that inspired generations of engineers and acadmicians. He is one of 78 U.S. engineers elected to membership this year.

He received his bachelor's degree in 1943 and his Dr.Eng.
in 1950, both in chemical engineering from The Johns Hopkins University. He joined the Princeton University faculty in 1950. At Princeton, Glassman previously was the American Cyanamid Professor of Environmental Sciences, and Director of the Center for Energy and Environmental Studies. In addition to more than 250 articles, he has published two major books, The Performance of Chemical Propellants and Combustion. Previous awards and honors include: a day-long Colloquium on Combustion in his honor (1993), the Sir Alfred C. Egerton Gold Medal from The Combustion Institute (1982), and the Ralph Coats Roe Award (1984) from The American Society of Engineering Education as "an outstanding teacher who has made notable contributions to the engineering profession."

Glassman, a longtime resident of the Princeton area, is listed inWho's Who in America, Who's Who in the World, Who's Who in Engineering,Who's Who in Frontier Science and Technology , and American Men of Science . He is a member of a number of professional and honorary societies.
