Jazz Pianist Jonny King to Give Talk

PRINCETON, N.J. -- Jazz musician Jonny King will give a talk on jazz appreciation and his own involvement in music at 7:30 p.m. on March 4 at Woolworth Music Center on the Princeton University campus.

Described by Downbeat as "one of the strongest piano voices of the new generation," King has played jazz piano since the age of nine. As a youngster he associated with piano legends Teddy Wilson and Earl 'Fatha' Hines; during the 1980s he studied with the late Tony Aless and rising star Mulgrew Miller.

Over the past decade King has played extensively throughout the United States, Europe, South America and Asia, most notably on a recent tour as a member of Joshua Redman's Quartet. King is also recognized as a major composer; his works can be heard on recordings featuring Dave Holland, Billy Pierce, Tony Reedus and others. His CDs include In From the Cold, Notes from the Underground and The Meltdown.

A author of the jazz primer What Jazz Is: An Insider's Guide to the Industry and Listening to Jazz, King will autograph his new book after the talk at Princeton. Call the International Center at 258-5006 for more information.
