Next Year in Jerusalem: WWS Students to Spend a Semester at Hebrew University

Princeton, N.J. -- Juniors at Princeton University’s Woodrow Wilson School will be able to enroll during the spring of 1999 at Hebrew University in Jerusalem and take a full range of courses including the special policy seminar, known as a Task Force, that is required of all the School’s undergraduates. The special seminar will be taught by a member of the Hebrew University faculty.

The opportunity to attend Hebrew University for a semester is the next stage of a program that began two years ago and has sent 21 students to study at the University of Cape Town, South Africa, under the direction of Professor Francis Wilson, a distinguished economist. Next spring, in addition to Hebrew University, Woodrow Wilson School students will also be able to attend Melbourne University in Australia and participate in a seminar taught by Brian Galligan, director of the university’s Centre for Public Policy.

"The South Africa experience has been so successful that we decided to expand the model," explained Woodrow Wilson School Dean Michael Rothschild. He added that the School is considering additional sites in Asia and South America, and that students may also again have the opportunity to attend the University of Cape Town in two years.

In a task force, students focus on a current issue or problem in public or international affairs, do independent research on some aspect of the topic, and then work together to develop policy recommendations. The students in Cape Town studied South Africa water resource policy last year and focused on education policy this semester.
