Princeton University Confers 1,730 Degrees at 251st Commencement

Princeton, N.J. -- Princeton University conferred a total of 1,730 bachelor and advanced degrees this morning at its 251st Commencement.

There were 583 men and 527 women in the graduating senior class -- a total of 1,110 recipients of bachelor’s degrees. The undergraduate degrees included 930 bachelors of arts (A.B.) and 180 bachelors of science in engineering (B.S.E.); in addition, four undergraduates from earlier classes were awarded a June degree.

Of those seniors awarded degrees, 514, or 46.3 percent, received some form of honors. There were 114 graduates who received highest honors, 177 who received high honors and 223 who received honors; 45.4 percent of women received honors and 47.2 percent of men received them.

The 616 advanced degrees awarded in the 1997-98 academic year included 264 doctors of philosophy, 214 masters of arts, 49 masters in public affairs, 32 masters of science in engineering, 17 masters of architecture, 14 masters in public affairs and urban and regional planning, 14 masters in public policy, 8 masters of fine arts, and 4 masters of arts in Near Eastern studies.

In keeping with tradition, two Commencement speeches, the valedictory and the Latin salutatory addresses, were delivered by members of the graduating class. Both the valedictorian, Andrew M. Neitzke of Narberth, Pa., and Jacob Andrew Rasmussen, of Barrington, Vt., received bachelor of arts degrees in mathematics. Princeton University President Harold T. Shapiro delivered brief remarks at the conclusion of the Commencement ceremony.
