Princeton Soccer Team Among Four Seeking Bragging Rights in Mercer County

West Windsor, N.J. -- On September 1, soccer teams from Princeton University, Rider University, the College of New Jersey and Mercer County Community College will take part in the Mercer County Cup, a one-night tournament that will benefit Isles, Inc., a Trenton-based community development corporation.

Mercer County Cup games will be played at Mercer County Park. Tickets are $5 for adults and $2 for children. Group rates are available with advance notice. For ticket information, call Princeton at 258-3538, Rider at 896-5450, Mercer County Community College at 586-4800, ext. 3741 or Isles at 393-5656, ext. 15.

The four soccer teams, which have each been nationally ranked within their respective collegiate divisions within the past five years, will compete for "bragging rights" within Mercer County, where all four colleges and universities are located. Spectators will also have a chance to see professional soccer player Mike Petke of the New Jersey Metrostars.

The tournament will begin with an opening ceremony at 4:30 p.m., followed by four games with 30-minute halves. The schedule is as follows:

    September 1
    4:30 p.m. - Opening ceremony
5:00 p.m. - Princeton University vs. College of New Jersey
6:15 p.m. - Mercer County Community College vs. Rider University
    7:30 p.m. - Consolation
    8:45 p.m. - Final

All proceeds will benefit Isles, which was founded by Princeton University alumnus Martin Johnson, Class of 1981. The award-winning community-development corporation is well-known for its community gardens, housing rehabilitation and community empowerment programs in the City of Trenton.
