Nobel Peace Prize Winner to Address Human Rights
PRINCETON, N.J. -- Jose Ramos-Horta, 1996 Nobel Peace Prize winner, will speak at Princeton University on Monday, November 9, at 8 p.m. in McCosh 50. He will discuss "Human Rights: Democracy and the Rule of Law in the Asia Pacific Region."
Ramos-Horta has spent his life working for human rights in East Timor, a country from which he has been in exile for speaking out against human rights violations there. In 1996, he shared the Nobel Peace Prize with Bishop Carlos Filipe Ximenes Belo. Both were honored for their "sustained efforts to hinder oppression of a small people," hoping that "this will spur efforts to find a diplomatic solution to the conflict of East Timor based on the people's right to self-determination."
In addition to his continued work for human rights in East Timor, Ramos-Horta is now working with Oscar Arias on an International Code of Conduct in Arms Transfers, which will obligate governments who wish to purchase arms to uphold internationally recognized standards of democracy, human rights, and peaceful international relations.
This event has been organized by the University chapter of Amnesty International, a worldwide organization working for the human rights of all people. Additional support has been provided by the Amnesty International Mercer County Group #67, Princeton University, the Undergraduate Student Government, Amnesty International USA, the Felix Spielman Memorial Fund, and the Africa World Press/Red Sea Press.
