Campus Resources and Services for International Students
Assistant Dean of Undergraduate Students/International Student Adviser
Making the adjustment to a new environment is not always easy, nor will it be the same experience for every person. The international student adviser is responsible for providing support and assistance for all undergraduate international students. Therefore, if you have inquiries or needs concerning travel, immigration, visas, employment, finances, personal issues, or other affairs related to your time at Princeton, you should contact Dean Baldwin’s office. If she is unable to help you directly, she will refer you to the appropriate person or office.
Rachel Baldwin, assistant dean of undergraduate students/international student adviser, may be contacted via the Office of the Dean of Undergraduate Students, 313 West College, Princeton, New Jersey, 08544; phone: (609) 258-3053; e-mail: rbaldwin@princeton.edu.
International Student Pre-orientation
Each fall in the week preceding freshman orientation, the international student adviser, assisted by student volunteers from the International Students Association at Princeton (ISAP), hosts a three-day pre-orientation for international students. Participants in pre-orientation are welcomed to campus, assisted in practical tasks such as purchasing travel-unfriendly items (bed linens, lamps, etc.), and opening bank accounts. They are also introduced to other international students, as well as the dean and the director of studies of the residential colleges and other staff members. Social events, outings, and other activities are also organized during pre-orientation. Incoming international first-year students are strongly encouraged to participate in these voluntary activities, which typically receive enthusiastic reviews.
If you plan to attend Pre-orientation 2005, the earliest you may arrive on campus and move into your room is check-in day, Wednesday, September 7, 2005. Important: If you intend to arrive in Princeton earlier than the scheduled check-in day, you will need to seek alternate accommodations as you will not be able to move into your room on campus (please refer to the hotel listings found in the “Miscellaneous Information” section of this booklet for assistance).
To register for pre-orientation, please complete our online registration form at www.princeton.edu/odus/mw-intl.htm. Click on the link “Register for Pre-orientation 2005.” If you are unable to register online and did not provide an e-mail address on your admission application, you will receive an invitation/RSVP card with your welcome packet from the international student adviser.
International Students Association at Princeton (ISAP)
The International Students Association at Princeton (ISAP) is a student-run organization consisting of all international undergraduates, including U.S. citizens who live abroad. Members of ISAP organize social and cultural functions, sports (such as cricket and badminton), and other activities. ISAP strives to encourage members to broaden knowledge of their countries and cultures while creating a congenial atmosphere conducive to greater understanding between themselves and American students. All Princeton students are welcome to join ISAP. If you want to learn more, you may send an e-mail to isap@princeton.edu or consult their Web site at www.princeton.edu/~isap.
International Center
There are more than 1,400 international students and visiting scholars on campus, representing more than 80 countries. The International Center, founded in 1974, provides a multitude of programs and a setting in which the special needs and interests of the international community can be met. As well, students and visitors can share their rich cultural resources with members of the University and the surrounding Princeton community through the center. All activities are open to the entire campus. For more information about programs and the center, please contact Paula Chow, director of the International Center, at (609) 258-5006; e-mail: pchow@princeton.edu; or visit www.princeton.edu/~intlctr.
