Deadline: November 14, 2008
Fields of study: The Predoctoral Fellowship offers support for three years in research-based programs in social and behavioral sciences, humanities, physical sciences, biological sciences, engineering, and mathematics, or for interdisciplinary programs comprised of two or more eligible disciplines leading to the Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) or Doctor of Science (Sc.D.).
Adviser: Dean Frank Ordiway • ordiway@princeton.edu • Ext. 8-1998
Description:
The goal of the Ford program is to increase the presence of underrepresented minorities on American college and university faculties. Approximately 60 predoctoral fellowships and 35 dissertation fellowships will be awarded in a national competition conducted by the National Research Council on behalf of the Ford Foundation. Each predoctoral fellowship will include an annual stipend of $20,000 to the fellow and an annual institutional grant of $2,000 to the fellowship institution in lieu of tuition and fees. (Note: Tenures for Predoctoral Fellowships will be nine or 12 months for each of the three fellowship years. Fellowship recipients must begin the first year’s tenure no later than September 1, 2009, and remain on tenure for at least one full academic year. After the first year of fellowship tenure, fellows may choose to defer funding for up to two years. The three years of support must, however, be used within a five-year period.)
Criteria for Selection:
The Ford Foundation Fellowships for doctoral study and dissertation completion grants are awarded to all citizens or nationals of the United States regardless of race, national origin, religion, gender, age, disability, or sexual orientation (must have become a U.S. citizen by November 14, 2008).
Those eligible at the time of application may be college seniors, first- and second-year graduate students, or others who have completed a limited amount of graduate work. Selection will be based on achievement and ability as evidenced by academic records, the proposed plan of graduate study, letters of recommendation, GRE General Test scores, and other indications of academic promise.
Application Procedure:
The online application is now available at www.national-academies.org/fellowships. The online submission deadline is 11:59 p.m. Eastern Standard Time on November 14, 2008.
Applicants for Predoctoral Fellowships are required to submit scores from the GRE general aptitude test. The National Research Council will notify all applicants early in April 2009 of the status of their applications.
