Chemical Engineering major Susan Rea '00 is one of 40 American students named by the British Embassy to receive this year's Marshall scholarships, which fund two years of graduate study in Great Britain.
A two-sport varsity athlete, Rea is completing certificate programs in engineering biology and materials science in addition to her chemical engineering major. For her senior thesis, she is researching materials that could improve the effectiveness of bone grafts.
As a Marshall scholar, she plans to continue pursuing research that combines engineering and medicine. At Cambridge University's Centre for Micromechanics, she will focus on research with biomedical applications. She hopes to extend her stay in Britain to three years and complete a PhD program.
In addition to her academic work, Rea is a member of the varsity basketball and soccer teams. She was named to the All-Ivy second team for soccer this year. During a semester-abroad program last year, she studied at the University of Melbourne in Australia and played both men's and women's baseball, while also participating in soccer, basketball, softball, track and field, badminton and crew.
Rea has also participated in Student Volunteers Council programs and has worked with the Urban Crisis Ministry, which aids needy families in the Princeton area.
Britain established the Marshall scholarships in 1953 in recognition of US assistance provided after World War II under the Marshall Plan.
