Swimmer delays start of school to represent Peru in
Olympics
Ruth Stevens
Rowing isn't the only water sport that will have
representation from Princeton at the Summer Olympics.
Juan Pablo Valdivieso, a freshman at the University this
fall, will be swimming the 200-meter butterfly on behalf of
the Peru team on Sept. 18. He'll begin classes at the
University as soon as he returns from Sydney.
In addition, Susan Teeter, coach of the Princeton women's
swim team, is an assistant manager of the U.S. Olympic swim
team. She was head manager of the 1996 Olympic team in
Atlanta.
Valdivieso was born in the United States and lives in
Bethesda, Md. His parents are natives of Peru, which enabled
him to join the team. He qualified for the Olympics at the
Pan American Games in August 1999 and at the South American
Championships in April 2000.
A 1999 high school graduate, Valdivieso deferred his
admission to Princeton for a year so that he could train for
the Olympics. He hopes to join the men's swim team when he
arrives on campus. His sister, Veronica Valdivieso, is a
1997 Princeton graduate and was a member of the women's swim
team for two years.
"The Olympics are especially exciting for me because my
grandfather was in the 1936 Games as a goalie for Peru's
soccer team," he says. "I'm hoping to at least make the top
16 in my event. If I make the semi-final round, it's always
so close between third and 16th that you never know what
might happen!"
