Thompson takes the reins

John Thompson III, who was raised by one Hall-of-Fame coach and played for another in college, has been named the Cappon-Green Head Coach of Men's Basketball at Princeton.

Thompson, a 1988 Princeton graduate, replaced Bill Carmody, who left to become the head coach at Northwestern.

Thompson has spent the last five years as the Tigers' assistant coach under Pete Carril and Carmody. He helped lead Princeton to a record of 114-31, a Top 10 national ranking, three Ivy League championships, five consecutive post-season appearances and one of the most memorable wins in NCAA tournament history with a 43-41 victory over UCLA in 1996.

An outstanding forward when he played for Princeton, Thompson racked up 358 assists -- the third most in the school's history.

"This is Princeton University, which has a storied tradition, and I feel honored to be given the opportunity to follow those who have come before me," Thompson said at a news conference Sept. 7.

"I want to let everyone who has ever been a part of Princeton basketball know that I will work hard to maintain the level of excellence that has been established here," he said. "And also, I want the University community to know that I will continue to work and our team will continue to work to maintain the standards the University has set across the board."

Thompson's father, longtime Georgetown coach John Thompson, was inducted into the Hall of Fame this past year. Carril, for whom he played at Princeton, was selected in 1997.
