UW drive kicks off

The United Way has a slogan: "The way America cares. Community by community."

Members of the Princeton University community once again will have an opportunity to show they care during the annual campaign in support of the United Way of Greater Mercer County.

The drive will run from Nov. 15 through Dec. 15 on the main campus and on Thursday, Dec. 7, at the Princeton Plasma Physics Lab. This year's fund drive chair is Robert Durkee, vice president for public affairs, and the faculty chair is physics professor Joseph Taylor, dean of the faculty.

"Last year the University and its faculty and staff generously contributed more than $168,000 to the United Way campaign," Durkee said. "This year we hope that we give even more to those in need. Our gifts help show that Princeton University and its faculty and staff care deeply about the communities in which we live and work."

All donations will be distributed to United Way programs in Mercer County or employees' home communities or to other health and human services agencies that are designated by individual donors. United Way funding is based on four focus areas: building self-sufficiency, strengthening families, promoting health and well-being, and responding to crises.

As in the past, the University will contribute 15 cents per dollar for all gifts made by payroll deduction to encourage employees to take advantage of that method of supporting the United Way. For all other types of donations, the University will contribute 10 cents per dollar.

This year, besides being able to make a contribution by cash, check or payroll deduction, donors will be able to give a gift of securities. This is in response to many who have asked that the University expand its United Way giving options.

As an incentive to giving, the first 400 people who make a United Way donation will receive two free tickets to the Princeton-Yale basketball game at Jadwin Gym on Saturday, Feb. 3. Also, at the end of the campaign, there will be a special drawing for an assortment of prizes for all who have made a donation to the United Way.

United Way campaign volunteers will distribute pledge cards. Those who have questions or need another pledge card should contact their departmental campaign volunteer, look at the United Way home page at <www.princeton.edu/pr/uw/> or contact the main campus United Way coordinator, Karen Woodbridge, at 258-5656 or <karenw@princeton.edu>. Plasma Physics employees should contact the lab's United Way campaign chair, Mary Ann Brown, at 125-3045 or <mabrown@pppl.gov>.
