Mentoring program seeks women
A new program that is intended to provide a forum for
academic women -- undergraduate and graduate students,
faculty members and staff members -- to interact in an
informal setting will be launched Tuesday, Nov. 14.
The Women's Mentoring Community (WoMenCo) will conduct
its first meeting over dinner from 5 to 7 p.m. at the
Women's Center, 243 Frist Campus Center. Meetings are
expected to continue at the same time on the second Tuesday
of each month.
Sponsored by the Women's Center, WoMenCo is the
brainchild of senior Leah Klugman, who found that her strong
connections with several women faculty members in high
school greatly enriched her development and growth.
"These connections were sometimes purely academic,
sometimes tended toward the philosophic and occasionally
touched on more personal subjects," said Susan Overton,
director of the Women's Center, in an invitation letter to
the University community. "With the assistance of the
Women's Center, Leah would like to offer the opportunity for
Princeton women students and faculty to create or nurture
those kinds of relationships."
Though mentoring will be the main objective of the group,
the organizers hope that WoMenCo will also be a discussion
group for issues in academia specific to women.
Discussion will continue beyond the meetings via an
e-mail list. The group also plans to schedule activities and
outings.
For more information, those interested should call
Overton at 258-5565 or e-mail her at
<sco1@princeton.edu>.
