Ombuds Office seeks volunteer mediatorsDo youou have good listening skills? Are you a creative problem-solver? Are you able to understand another person's point of view, maintain emotional balance and tolerate ambiguity and conflict? If so, you could be a prime candidate for Princeton's expanding Peer Mediation Program. The Ombuds Office is seeking faculty and staff volunteers to fill 25 slots as mediators. The application deadline is Friday, Dec. 8. Those selected will participate in a three-day training session in February. Beyond the training, mediation involves a time commitment of a maximum of 10 hours per semester. Mediators facilitate not more than two mediations a year. "The residual benefit of going through the mediation training is that participants learn skills that will help them everywhere: with their kids, with their spouses, with their jobs," says Michael Ann Walstad, assistant to the ombuds officer. Adlay Bugg, assistant ticket manager in athletics, is one of the 12 current mediators on campus. She says her role in the process is personally satisfying as well as a way of contributing to a better work environment. "Besides getting a personal warm, fuzzy feeling for having helped a situation, you're contributing to the overall climate on campus," Bugg says. "Instead of being somebody who sits back and complains about the way things are and the way we think people handle things, you get to mediate that process and perhaps, at the same time, instill something in people in terms of what they take with them even after the mediation process. "We spend so much of our time at work, the last thing we want to do is have problems while we're here," she continues. "We want to try and make it so that people can get along and be able to deal with each other on a daily basis."
