Health plans cover breast reconstruction The Women's Health and Cancer Rights Act of 1998 guarantees coverage to any health plan member who is receiving benefits in connection with a mastectomy and who elects breast reconstruction in connection with that surgery. Patients are entitled to coverage for: • Reconstruction of the breast on which the mastectomy has been performed; • Surgery and reconstruction of the other breast to produce symmetrical appearance; and • Prostheses and treatment of physical complications in all stages of the mastectomy, including lymphedemas (swelling associated with the removal of lymph nodes). These services will be provided in a manner determined in consultation with the attending physician and the patient. Coverage for these services is subject to applicable deductibles, coinsurance or copayments.
