The Graduate School

While formally established in 1900, Princeton's Graduate School has a history that extends back more than 100 years.

- The first resident graduate student was a Scottish native, Daniel Thane, Class of 1748, who stayed on to study theology under President Aaron Burr Sr.

- James Madison, Class of 1771, may have been the first graduate student to study something other than theology. The future fourth president of the United States stayed on for six months to study Hebrew and ethics under President John Witherspoon.

- By the early 1800s there were two dozen "graduate students," but they were not granted advanced degrees.

- While Princeton earlier awarded some honorary Ph.D.'s, it did not confer the first "earned" doctorates until 1879, when James Williamson took the first Ph.D. and William Libby took the first D.Sc.

- Shortly after the turn of the century when the Graduate School was officially established by the Board of Trustees, enrollment had grown to more than 100 students.
