Caution urged in new roundabout

The construction of the first of two roundabouts designed to improve traffic flow and safety on campus has been completed.

The south guard booth on Elm Drive has been moved from the area near Parking Lot 16 to a location near Poe Field. The area near Parking Lot 16 has been converted to a roundabout.

"An important objective of these modifications is to eliminate the long lines and delays at the guard booth, which have occurred when vehicles with destinations in the central campus must stop for information and passes, holding up employees and service vehicles on their way to parking or other destinations," said Jon Hlafter, director of physical planning.

Motorists are urged to use caution when entering the new roundabout. Traffic circulates one way around a central island, with entering traffic yielding the right of way to circulating traffic.

A second roundabout will be constructed at the corner of Faculty Road and Elm Drive early this year.
