Science on Saturday talks set

The Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory will offer a series of "Science on Saturday" talks this winter geared toward high school students but open to all.

Students, teachers, parents and community members are invited to attend the free lectures, which begin at 9:30 a.m. and usually finish by 11:15 a.m. in the Gottlieb Auditorium on the Forrestal Campus.

The talks will be given by scientists, mathematicians and other professionals involved in cutting-edge research. Here is the schedule:

Jan. 13. "The Discovery of the Binary Pulsar," Russell Hulse, PPPL, the 1993 Nobel Prize winner in physics.

Jan. 20. "Plasma Rockets for Future Space Missions," Yevgeny Raitses, PPPL.

Feb. 3. "Fanciful Fliers -- A Different Approach to Small Aircraft Design," David Cylinder, PPPL.

Feb. 10. "Exploiting the Genomics Revolution for the Discovery of New Medicines," Raymond Salemme, 3-D Pharmaceuticals.

Feb. 17. "What's Up with the Hubble," Edward Groth, Department of Physics.

Feb. 24. New Jersey Regional Science Bowl; no program.

March 3. "Biology and Conservation of North American Songbirds," Rachael Winfree, Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology.

March 10. "The Use of Echo-Cardiography in Diagnosing Heart Disease," Andrew Costin, Princeton Medical Group.

March 17. To be announced.
