Name: Jennifer McNabb

Position: International graduate student adviser in the Office of Visa Services. Providing immigration advising and information for international graduate students here on student visas. Serving as a clearinghouse and resource for those students.

Quote: "I really enjoy working with the international population. I'm always learning new things from them. I'm dedicated to helping students with their questions. Immigration can be really confusing. I feel I'm doing my job when I can help clear up that confusion."

Other interests: Traveling, reading, cooking and spending time with her cat, Claudia.


Briefs

Andrew Yao, the William and Edna Macaleer Professor Engineering and Applied Science and professor of computer science, has been elected to the Academia Sinica, the most prominent academic institution in the Republic of China.

Vincent Poor, professor of electrical engineering, has been selected to receive the 2001 Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers Graduate Teaching Award. He was noted for "exemplary teaching, inspired guidance of graduate students, and contributing to graduate education in statistical signal processing."

James Sturm, professor of electrical engineering, has been elected a fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers "for contributions to novel silicon-based semiconductor devices, large-area electronics and engineering education."

Thomas DaCosta Kaufman, professor of art and archaeology, has been made a foreign member of the Polish Academy of Sciences.

Amy Gutmann, the Laurence Rockefeller Professor of Politics and director of the Center for Human Values, has been elected president of the American Society for Political and Legal Philosophy. The society was founded in 1955 to foster discussion of issues in political and legal philosophy as they relate to the fields of law, philosophy and the social sciences.


Retirements

Effective Oct. 1: In chemistry, academic support staff member Gail Munro, after nine years.

Effective Nov. 1: In physics, secretary Joan Koether, after 21 years.

Effective Dec. 1: In purchasing, purchasing agent Arthur Chaykowsky, after 38 years.

Effective Jan. 1: In building services, janitor William Corcoran, after 14 years, and lead rental equipment custodian James Stout, after 10 years; in telecommunications, manager Thomas Heller, after 11 years; and in dining services, manager of the business office John Paulaski, after 34 years.

Effective Feb. 1: In telecommunications, manager Carol Petty, after 22 years; and in economics, academic department manager Uta Runyan, after 28 years.
