Remembering King

Lively music, well-deserved awards and a thoughtful
speech signified the University's observance of Martin
Luther King Day Jan. 15 in Richardson Auditorium. At left,
the New York Daily News Carribeat CASYM Steel Orchestra, a
group of 50 young people aged 6 through 18, performed its
unique blend of reggae, calypso, pop, jazz and classical
music.
Above, Robert Durkee, vice president for public affairs,
presented twins Kyle and Ryan Czepiel, fourth-graders at
Antheil School in Ewing, with their first-place award in the
annual poster contest for students in grades 4-6. The two
received T-shirts featuring their winning entry and a $100
check. Awards also were presented to winners of an essay
contest for students in grades 7-12. Both contests centered
on the theme of the inauguration and providing President
Bush with ideas on improving race relations and achieving
King's goals.
In her featured address, Vice President for Campus Life
Janet Dickerson said, "We must, together, find a way to
remove those elements of race and class prejudice that
threaten to impair our relationships and damage our
communities from within. We have a cognitive understanding
of these issues; now we must work toward reconciliation and
sustainable solutions!"
