Two faculty members were named to endowed professorships at
the Nov. 17 Board of Trustees meeting.
Harold Foster was named the Townsend Martin, Class
of 1917, Professor of Art and Archaeology, effective July 1,
2000; and Anthony Grafton was named the Henry Putnam
University Professor of History, effective Sept. 1,
2000.
Foster joined the art and archaeology faculty in 1997. He
previously taught at Cornell University, and served as
director of critical and curatorial studies for an
independent study program at the Whitney Museum.
Foster, whose field is modern art, is the author of three
books and the editor of three others. He also has written
numerous articles for professional and mainstream
publications, and he has served as editor or on the
editorial boards of several art magazines, including October
Magazine. In 1998, he was the recipient of a Guggenheim
Fellowship.
A 1977 magna cum laude graduate of Princeton in English
literature and art history, he holds an M.A. degree in
English literature from Columbia University and a Ph.D. in
art history from the City University of New York.
Grafton joined the history faculty in 1975, after earning
his A.B., A.M. and Ph.D. degrees from the University of
Chicago. He was named the Andrew W. Mellon Professor of
History in 1988 and the Dodge Professor of History in
1993.
A scholar of the Renaissance, Grafton is the author of
numerous articles for professional journals and books,
including "Joseph Scaliger: A Study in the History of
Classical Scholarship," "The Footnote: A Curious History"
and "Cardano's Cosmos: The Worlds and Work of a Renaissance
Astrologer."
The recipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship and the Los
Angeles Times Book Prize, Grafton received the Behrman Prize
for Achievement in the Humanities at Princeton in 1996. He
has served as a visiting scholar at several institutions in
Europe.
