Board of Trustees

• Princeton's Board of Trustees consists of 40 members, two of whom -- the governor of New Jersey and the president of the University -- serve as ex officio members.

• Thirteen of the 40 are elected by alumni for four-year terms. This practice began in 1900. The rest are chosen by the board itself to serve as either four-year term trustees or 10-year charter trustees.

• Of the original 12 trustees in 1746, nine were clergymen. In the second charter in 1748, there were 23 trustees, including 12 clergymen. In 1913, the stipulation that at least eight clergymen be on the board was dropped. Today there is one member who is a clergyman.

• Although charter and term trustees currently are not required to be alumni, most have earned either undergraduate or graduate degrees from the University.

• The board added women to its ranks in 1971 when two were elected as charter trustees. Today there are 11 women trustees.

• The board normally meets five times each year; trustee committees meet more often.
