University trustees honor Shapiros
Princeton NJ -- At a farewell dinner for President Shapiro
and his wife, Vivian, on April 20, University trustees
announced three honors to commemorate their 13 years of
service.
The board will endow a professorship in the president's name, will name the café in the Frist Campus Center for Vivian Shapiro and will name a campus walk for the couple.
Shapiro expects to complete his presidency at the end of this academic year and return to full-time teaching and research in the Department of Economics and the Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs, where he has held a joint appointment. He earned his Ph.D. in economics from Princeton in 1964.
"To commemorate your vision for the future of Princeton's historic educational mission, we will create the Harold T. Shapiro '64 Professorship of Economics," said Robert Rawson Jr., chair of the board's executive committee. "We believe it is most fitting that this chair will strengthen the distinguished department that first drew you to Princeton and reflects not only your love of teaching but also your determination to keep Princeton's faculty at the forefront of research and scholarship."
The board decided to name the Frist café for Vivian Shapiro because, since opening last fall, it has fostered a sense of community spirit that also is one of her hallmarks.
"Vivian, while actively participating through your own scholarship in the intellectual life of the community, you have demonstrated deep concern for the welfare of members of this community and forged connections among Princetonians, both on campus and around the world, that have touched and benefited all of us," Rawson said. "To recognize the splendid role you have played in drawing the Prince-ton community closer, we will name the popular café in the new Frist Campus Center in your honor."
The new pathway that will be named the Shapiro Walk will extend the historic McCosh Walk to the east between Washington Road and Olden Street. It will pass through Scudder Plaza at the Woodrow Wilson School and Fisher-Bendheim Halls, past the new home of social sciences, Wallace Hall, the nearly completed Friend Engineering Center and the Department of Computer Science, to the School of Engineering and Applied Science.
Expanding horizons
"The University's horizons have expanded considerably over the past 13 years in the intellectual realm and, in more readily visible dimensions, in the physical campus," Rawson said. "New pathways are being forged to link academic disciplines, and new campus walkways are being created to link old and new facilities together."
He said the trustees felt that naming the walkway was most appropriate not only because it recognizes Harold Shapiro's role in creating and expanding these connections, but also because it honors the couple's commitment to campus beautification.
