"Dr. Goldston has done an excellent job in helping to build
high morale at the Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory
during a time of great change," said William Happer, the
Eugene Higgins Professor of Physics and the chair of the
University Research Board. "He has given fundamental science
and engineering issues more prominence in the laboratory
program, and he has helped to build stronger ties with other
parts of Princeton University and with the fusion science
community in the United States and other countries. The
scientific achievements at the laboratory in the last four
years have been outstanding. We look forward to further
effective leadership from Dr. Goldston in the future."
Goldston has been on the PPPL staff since he came here as
a graduate student in 1972 after receiving his bachelor's
degree, magna cum laude, from Harvard University. He served
as a research assistant at the lab for five years and earned
his Ph.D. in astrophysics from Princeton in 1977. Over the
next 15 years, he took on progressively responsible
positions on the PPPL research staff.
Goldston was named professor of astrophysical sciences in
1992, a position he continues to hold, and associate
director for research at the lab in 1995. He was selected as
the director of the PPPL in 1997.
