Special gift has deep campus roots

Princeton NJ -- At the May 24 staff reception honoring Harold and Vivian Shapiro, several gifts were presented and tributes read on the occasion of his retirement as president.

The Shapiros, flanked by facilities staff members who worked on the bookcase (from left): Joseph Mangone and Russell Rosie, carpenter shop; Steve Virostko Jr., physical planning; Roger Madden, glass shop; and William Collins, paint shop.

One that stood out from the rest because of its sheer size was a bookcase constructed by craftsmen from the facilities department. The piece was comprised "entirely of materials that have been part of the Princeton University campus fabric," said Kathleen Mulligan, vice president for facilities, who made the presentation.

The top and shelves were crafted from an oak pew removed from the University Chapel. The pew was made from wood originally intended for Civil War gun carriages. The shelves are held up by original library shelf supports from Prospect House.

The glass doors were created from the windows of Little Hall, and include the original leaded glass panes. The bronze cabinet pulls are original window pulls found in Campbell Hall. The dentil molding was made from chestnut stair balusters from Little Hall. The main body of the cabinet was milled from a 120-year-old red oak tree removed from the campus grounds in 1997.

Mulligan also presented the Shapiros with a set of bookends crafted from the original structural steel members taken from Nassau Hall after the 1855 fire, which gutted part of the east wing. These steel members actually were sections of railroad rails dating back to the 1700s.

"The bottom non-skid rubber pads were recycled inner tubes from Firestone tires removed from President Shapiro's car," Mulligan quipped.
