Princeton NJ -- Mary Harper, a scholar of 19th century
French culture, has been named associate director of
Princeton's new Society of Fellows in the Liberal Arts,
which brings exceptional postdoctoral scholars to campus for
three years of research, teaching, weekly discussions and
other informal gatherings.
The recipient of a Ph.D. in comparative literature from
the University of Wisconsin, Harper also has studied in
England, France and Germany. Since 1984, she has been a
lecturer in Romance languages, teaching French and European
literatures. For two years, she served as acting associate
director of the Society of Fellows. Her new appointment
follows a national search.
The society is directed by Alexander Nehamas, the Edmund
Carpenter II Class of 1943 Professor in the Humanities and
chair of the Humanities Council, in consultation with an
interdisciplinary group of faculty fellows consisting of
Harold Foster, Anthony Grafton, Simon Levin, Emily Martin,
Susan Naquin, Joyce Carol Oates and Michael Wood.
