Baseball at Princeton

As pennant fever sweeps the nation, Princetonians are reminded of the distinguished history baseball has on this campus:

• Baseball is Princeton's oldest sport. The Baseball Club of the Class of 1862 of Nassau Hall was formed in 1858 -- the first organized sport at the school.

• The first game played against an outside opponent saw the Princetonians tie an Orange, N.J., team 42-42 on Oct. 22, 1860.

• Princeton played its first intercollegiate game on Nov. 22, 1864, defeating Williams College 27-16.

• William Schenck 1880 invented the catcher's chest protector -- by stuffing copies of The Princetonian in his shirt. Following a game that pitted Princeton against Harvard in 1880, a sporting goods manufacturer in Boston developed a more sophisticated version of the pad.

• Princeton played in the first televised baseball game on May 17, 1939, at Columbia University. NBC covered the second game of a doubleheader in which the Tigers defeated the Lions 2-1.
