Santa's annual visit to Prospect House

Expert to discuss impact of terrorist attacks on policy in the Middle East

Richard Murphy, the Hasib Sabbagh Senior Fellow for the Middle East and director of Middle East studies for the Council on Foreign Relations, will present a public lecture on campus Monday, Dec. 10.
    He will discuss "The Impact of Sept. 11 on America's Role in the Middle East" at 4:30 p.m. in Dodds Auditorium, Robertson Hall.
    The Middle East studies department and its fellows serve as a "think tank" for the Council on Foreign Relations, a nongovernmental, nonprofit and nonpartisan organization. In addition to conducting research and publishing books and articles on major foreign policy topics, fellows concentrate on issues that shape the international agenda. As the director of Middle East studies for council, Murphy studies the interrelationship of the United States and the Middle East in such areas as economics, foreign policy and technology.
    The lecture is sponsored by the Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs' Office of External Affairs.

Malaysian writer to speak about Islam

Karim Raslan, a lawyer and writer from Malaysia, will give an address titled "Kuala Lumpur Is Not Kabul: Militants and Tolerance in the Asian Core of the Muslim World" on Tuesday, Dec. 11. The talk, part of the Southeast Asia Lecture Series, will begin at 4:30 p.m. in 4 Friend Center.
    Raslan is the senior partner of Raslan Loong, a corporate law firm in Kuala Lumpur. He is also the author of "Ceritalah: Malaysia in Transition" (1996), and he writes a fortnightly syndicated column, "Eye in Asia," published by major newspapers in Asia. As a Fulbright scholar at Columbia University this year, Raslan is working on a project on "Freedom of Expression in Islamic Societies."
    Raslan's lecture is sponsored by the Center of International Studies, the Department of Politics, the Council on Regional Studies, the Southeast Asia Students Organization, Foreign Policy in Focus and the International Center.."

Afghanistan to be focus of Dec. 12 WWS address

South Asia in the Spotlight: Afghanistan at a Crossroads" is the title of a lecture to be presented Wednesday, Dec. 12, on campus.
    Robin Raphel, who served as the U.S. State Department's first assistant secretary of state for South Asian affairs from 1993 to 1997, will speak at 4:30 p.m. in Dodds Auditorium, Robertson Hall.
    Raphel was U.S. ambassador to Tunisia from 1997 until September 2000, when she was named senior vice president at the National Defense University. She has held several other positions in the State Department dealing with Near East and South Asian affairs.
    The lecture is sponsored by the Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs' Office of External Affairs.

  

  

Richardson Auditorium

The American Boychoir will perform at 8 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 12, in Richardson Auditorium, Alexander Hall. Founded in 1937 and based in Princeton, the choir includes boys in grades five through eight representing 24 states. For ticket information, call the Richardson box office at 258-5000.

Brown-bag lunch on safety offered

Concerned about your safety while holiday shopping? Do you know the signs of a potentially dangerous situation?
    The Work/Life Task Force of the Standing Committee on the Status of Women will sponsor two brown-bag lunch sessions titled "How to Protect Yourself! How to Avoid Being a Victim!" on Thursday, Dec. 13.
    Sgt. Michael Septer of the University's Department of Public Safety will lead one session from noon to 1 p.m. and a second session from 1 to 2 p.m. in the Clio Hall Senate Chamber.

Holiday festival planned at Frist

The Frist Campus Center will play host to a Winter Holiday Festival for the campus community Monday through Thursday, Dec. 10-13.
    Faculty, staff and students are invited to come and sample traditional winter holiday food and drinks from various cultures, enjoy musical performances and participate in other activities.
    Beginning at 11 a.m. each day, there will be a display table filled with traditional winter holiday symbols from Christmas, Chanukah, Diwali, Ramadan, Three Kings Day and Kwanzaa on the 100 level. In the evening, Café Vivian will be the site of music, activities and story telling, including performances by Culturally Yours, the Klez Dispensers, Kindred Spirit, the Firehazards and the Tigerlillies.
    On Monday evening, Creole chicken, potato pancakes and samosas from various holiday celebrations will be available on the 100 level. Traditional holiday desserts, snacks and beverages will be offered Tuesday and Wednesday evenings on the 100 level.
    The Winter Holiday Festival is sponsored by the Frist Campus Center, Frist Dining Services, the Center for Jewish Life, the Third World Center, the International Center, the Consortium of International Student Organizations, the Graduate College and the Religious Life Council.

McCarter Theatre

The world premiere of "Yellowman" by playwright and actress Dael Orlandersmith is set for Thursday, Jan. 10, at McCarter Theatre. Co-produced with the Wilma Theater and the Long Wharf Theatre, the play dramatizes the internal prejudices that exist between light- and dark-skinned African Americans. Israeli civil rights leader to lecture

"Global War, Class Struggles" is the title of a lecture to be presented Thursday, Dec. 13, on campus.
    Yael Tamir, a senior lecturer in philosophy at Tel Aviv University, will speak at 4:30 p.m. in Dodds Auditorium, Robertson Hall.
    A founding member of the organization Peace Now, Tamir has been a leader in the Israeli civil rights movement. She served as minister of immigrant absorption in the government of Ehud Barak. She is the author of "Liberal Nationalism" and co-editor with Princeton's Stephen Macedo of "Moral and Political Education."
    In 1994-95, she was a Laurance Rockefeller Visiting Fellow at the University Center for Human Values. Her talk is sponsored by the center's James Moffett '29 Lectures in Ethics.
