Jonathan Belcher, governor of New Jersey -- and a tireless promoter of the new college -- was awarded the University's first honorary degree at its first Commencement, November 9, 1748

University's Board of Trustees

• When James McGreevey is inaugurated as New Jersey's governor on Jan. 15, he automatically becomes an ex officio member of the University's Board of Trustees. This practice began in 1748 under the second charter of what was then the College of New Jersey.

• Under the first charter in 1746, there were 12 trustees: nine clergymen, one merchant, one lawyer and one "man of leisure and wealth and given to good works."

• The 23 trustees named in the second charter "represented a broader spectrum of society and reflected the founders' avowed purpose of raising up men who would be 'ornaments of the State as well as the Church,'" according to "A Princeton Companion."

• Besides the governor of the province, Jonathan Belcher, the new trustees included four members of the provincial council of New Jersey as well as two judges and a merchant from Philadelphia.
