The Sloan Digital Sky Survey
The Sloan Digital Sky Survey is an ambitious project to create a highly detailed map of one quarter of the sky. Princeton is among 11 research institutions conducting the survey, which is based on technology and a plan conceived by Princeton astrophysicist James Gunn. The project began making observations in 1998 and is scheduled to be completed in 2005.
So far, the Sloan survey has measured the position and brightness of 50 million stars, galaxies, quasars and other celestial objects. Ultimately it is expected to measure 200 million objects.
For 250,000 of those objects, Sloan scientists have measured how much light of different wavelengths (colors) is coming from each, yielding information about the distance and physical nature of the object. The survey is expected to record such spectrographic data for 1 million objects.
