Student publications

• The oldest surviving student publication at Princeton is The Nassau Lit, begun in 1842 as The Nassau Monthly. Its goal, according to its first editor, was "to afford a medium through which young writers might publish incognito their first lucubrations to the world."

• Next came The Princetonian, founded in 1876 as "an impartial record of College incident and a medium for a bold, frank and manly expression of College opinion," according to one of its early editors, Woodrow Wilson. The newspaper began appearing five times a week in 1892, at that time adding "daily" to its name.

• Humor magazine The Princeton Tiger first appeared in 1882 and, true to its non-serious mission, has never issued a mission statement.

• Today a dozen publications are produced by and for Princeton students, including The Princeton Tory, The Progressive Review, Nassau Weekly, Common Sense and Kruller Literary Magazine. Students also produce other publications with both more specific and broader audiences.

• The newest publication, Troubadour Magazine, distributed its first issue in December 2001. The magazine prints travel pieces, fiction, poetry and artwork, and its mission is to enable students to "become scholars of each other's experience."
