$1 million NSF award funds application of genome data

Princeton NJ -- Saeed Tavazoie, assistant professor of molecular biology, has received an early-career research grant worth $1 million from the National Science Foundation.

The five-year grant will fund research aimed at using the detailed information obtained from genome projects to build large-scale maps of how the many parts of a cell work together.

The grant is part of the National Science Foundation's CAREER program, which supports young, tenure-track faculty members "who are most likely to become the academic leaders of the 21st century." It supports proposals that include a combination of research and teaching initiatives.

Tavazoie, who came to Princeton in 2000, holds a Ph.D. from Harvard University and an M.D. from Harvard Medical School/Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He plans to develop high-speed methods for identifying and monitoring interactions of proteins and DNA -- essentially the "wiring" of a cell.

Three engineering faculty members, David August, Jeffrey Carbeck and Evgenii Narimanov, also received CAREER awards this year (see story in the Feb. 25 Weekly Bulletin).
