E-mail
Life at Princeton has increasingly come to rely on
e-mail. On average 60,000 e-mails are sent from
"princeton.edu" addresses every day, and another 107,000
messages arrive at the University each day. The campus has
18,581 e-mail addresses through the University's server.
Though it may sometimes seem like it takes forever
for an e-mail to arrive, the average speed of a message sent
from an on-campus computer to a "princeton.edu" e-mail
account is a mere two seconds.
The peak number of simultaneous connections to the
University's central e-mail server is 5,267.
The large volume of e-mail opens the door for
viruses, which can disable a computer. In December, the
University's Office of Information Technology installed
anti-virus software on the central e-mail servers to strip
viruses from incoming e-mail. In the last month, the
software has removed 19,453 viruses from incoming
messages.
