Three key administrators appointed this summer

Princeton NJ -- Over the summer, the University announced the appointments of three key administrators:

• Maria Klawe, a computer scientist and dean of science at the University of British Columbia, was named dean of the School of Engineering and Applied Science, effective Jan. 1.

• Longtime Princeton faculty member William B. Russel was named dean of the Graduate School, effective Aug. 1.

• Daniel Silverman, a physician with experience in health systems management, academic administration and medical education, was named chief medical officer of the University and executive director of University Health Services, effective Aug. 15.

Klawe

Klawe will succeed James Wei, who stepped down June 30 to return to full-time teaching and research after 11 years in the post. James Sturm, professor of electrical engineering and director of the Center for Photonics and Opto-Electronic Materials, is serving as interim dean through December.

Klawe, who also will be appointed a professor in the Department of Computer Science, has been a leader in both academia and industry. She spent eight years at the IBM Almaden Research Center in California, and became the head of the Department of Computer Science at the University of British Columbia in 1988. She was appointed vice president for student and academic services in 1995 and dean of science in 1998.

Russel

Russel succeeds John Wilson, who has served as dean since 1994 and announced his retirement last October. The Arthur W. Marks '19 Professor, Russel has been a member of the faculty in chemical engineering since 1974.

He has a long history of service to the University, as chair of the Department of Chemical Engineering from 1987 to 1996 and as a member of the Committee on Appointments and Advancements, the University Research Board, the Committee on the Sixth College and search committees for the provost, athletic director and dean of the faculty.

Silverman

Silverman, who most recently was director of Evidence-Based Medicine Solutions and associate professor of clinical psychiatry at the Wash-ington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, succeeds Dr. Pamela Bowen, who earlier this year announced her plans to step down as director of University Health Services after 11 years of service to Princeton.

In addition to serving as a lecturer, clinical teacher and supervisor, Silverman worked with Dr. William Peck, dean of the School of Medicine, to create EBM Solutions, a consortium involving medical schools at Washington, Duke, Emory, Vanderbilt, Oregon Health Sciences and Mount Sinai/New York universities. Its goal is to provide evidence-based clinical guidelines and interactive treatment tools to patients, physicians, employers, healthcare systems and managed care organizations.
