Name: Andrew Dutko.

Position: Advanced laboratory coordinator for the Department of Physics. Maintaining the experiments for this 33-room higher-level physics lab in Jadwin Hall and ensuring they are in working order. Also serving as the department's photographer.

Quote: "This isn't just a job--it's a lot of fun."

Other interests: Spending time with his fiancée. Dutko previously was a U.S. Marine Presidential Guard, protecting George Bush Sr. and Bill Clinton.


Briefs

Erika Gilson, senior lecturer in Near Eastern studies, will serve as an associate director of the National Middle East Language Resource Center, which recently was created by the U.S. Department of Education. The new Title VI Language Resource Center will pool the talents of language experts from more than 20 universities to increase and improve opportunities for learning Middle East languages. The center will be headquartered at Brigham Young University.
    Gilson will have primary oversight for Turkish, one of the four major languages of the region (the others are Arabic, Hebrew and Persian). She will collaborate with other language professionals to develop teaching materials, retool techniques for teacher training, integrate pedagogy and technology, create language proficiency tests, and improve and expand study abroad and K-12 programs.
