R&D Council honors freshman

Princeton NJ -- The Research and Development Council of New Jersey has named freshman Sophia Karas as its 2002 New Jersey Science Scholar of the Year and awarded her a $5,000 scholarship.

The council gives the scholarship annually to honor the highest achieving science student among the state's high school graduates. The council chose Karas from among candidates nominated by the state's Ph.D.-granting research institutions, Princeton, Rutgers, Seton Hall, the New Jersey Institute of Technology, the Stevens Institute of Technology and the University of Medicine and Dentistry.

Karas, who has identified chemistry as a possible area of concentration, has received many honors for her achievements, including the Merck Scholar Award in chemistry and the New Jersey Governor's School Scholar in the Sciences award. She graduated from Livingston High School in Livingston, N.J.
