Princeton Field Hockey

• In November 1971, the first field hockey game was played at Princeton when the Tigers faced off against the Yale women on the day of the annual Princeton-Yale football game. Of all the Princeton-Yale athletic contests played that day, women's field hockey provided the only Princeton victory, 3-2.

• For the first five years, the Princeton field hockey team never lost to the Yale women -- or to many other teams. The season records were: 1971, 5-2; 1972, 7-3-1; 1973, 8-3; 1974, undefeated; 1975, undefeated. From 1972 through 1975 Princeton was the Big Three and Ivy League Champion.

• Recent Princeton field hockey teams also have been quite successful, reaching the NCAA Final Four four times (1996, 1997, 1998 and 2001) and twice playing for the NCAA title (1996, 1998).

• This year, the Princeton field hockey team completed its third consecutive perfect Ivy League season (7-0) and won its ninth straight Ivy League title. The Tigers played in their third consecutive NCAA tournament, defeating Michigan in the first round, 4-3, before losing to Penn State in the national quarterfinals, 3-2, on Nov. 17. Eight members of the Princeton team were named to the 2002 STX/NFHCA Division I All-Region Team for the Mid-Atlantic Region.
