President's daughter a member of the Class of 2003

President Tilghman and her daughter, Rebecca.

At commencement exercises on June 3, President Tilghman conferred a bachelor of arts degree upon her daughter, Rebecca. While she is not the first Princeton president to have the pleasure of seeing her offspring graduate, she is the first president to award a University degree to her daughter.

Other presidents have conferred degrees on their sons, including:

• Samuel Finley (1761-1766) on his son, Samuel Jr. in 1765.

• John Witherspoon (1768-1794) on his sons, John Jr. in 1773 and David in 1774.

• Samuel Smith (1795-1812), who married President Witherspoon's eldest daughter, Ann, on their son, John Witherspoon Smith in 1795.

• James McCosh (1868-1888) on his son, Andrew James McCosh in 1877.

• Francis Patton (1888-1902) on his sons, George Stevenson in 1891; Francis Landey Jr. in 1893; Robert Hunter in 1896; and John MacMillan Stevenson in 1898.
