Three faculty members transfer to emeritus statusThree faculty members were transferred to emeritus status in recent action by the Board of Trustees. All are effective July 1, 2003. They are: Kent Calder, associate professor of politics and international affairs; Robert Jahn, professor of mechanical and aerospace engineering; and John Wilson, the Agate Brown and George Collord Professor of Religion.
Calder took a leave from the University from 1996 to 1999 to serve as special adviser to the U.S. ambassador to Japan, working un-der Walter Mondale and Thomas Fo-ley. He also has held staff positions with the U.S. Con-gress and the Federal Trade Commission and has served as a member of the Council on Foreign Relations since 1990. Calder is the author of several books, including "Pacific Defense: Arms, Energy and America's Future in Asia," which received the 1997 Mainichi Asia-Pacific Grand Prix for its analysis of how economic change is transforming the U.S.-East Asian security equation. He also wrote "Crisis and Compensation: Public Policy and Political Stability in Japan," which was awarded both the 1990 Ohira Memorial Prize and the Arisawa Memorial Prize for its account of how domestic politics have shaped Japanese public policy processes.
His research focuses on the experimental and analytical study of high-power plasma discharges for space propulsion applications and on anomalous human/machine interactions and consciousness-correlated physical phenomena. Jahn is the author of "Physics of Electric Propulsion" and the co-author of "Margins of Reality: The Role of Consciousness in the Physical World." In 1979, he established the Princeton Engineering Anomalies Research (PEAR) program to pursue rigorous scientific study of the interaction of human consciousness with sensitive physical devices, systems and processes common to contemporary engineering practice. A fellow of the American Physical Society and of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, Jahn has received the Curtis McGraw Research Award of the American Society of Engineering Education. He has served as a member of the NASA Space Systems and Technology Advisory Committee,
He has been credited with reshaping graduate education at Princeton through initiatives that increased financial support for students and with raising the school's profile through outreach efforts, including the school's centennial celebration in 2000-01. A specialist in American religious history whose scholarly research has focused on religion and public life and religious thought, Wilson won the University's Behrman Award for distinguished achievement in the humanities in 1992. He holds a bachelor's degree from Harvard University and a Ph.D. degree from Union Theological Seminary. |
