Members of the campus and local communities celebrated Martin Luther King Jr. Day at Richardson Auditorium in Alexander Hall on Jan. 19, a day before Barack Obama’s inauguration as the first African American U.S. president.

President Tilghman presented the MLK Day Journey Award for Lifetime Service to engineering professor William Massey for his work mentoring underrepresented minorities in the fields of science and technology (pictured top left).

Keynote speaker Hugh Price (pictured top right), a Princeton scholar and activist, stressed that while Obama’s election marks an unprecedented step in realizing King’s dream, much work remains to be done to fulfill the vision of an American society in which people of all backgrounds thrive.

The Oasis Youth Steel Pan Ensemble of Newark entertained the crowd. To read more about the event, visit www.princeton.edu/mlk.
