Lieutenant Colonel Kevin M. McKiernan
Lieutenant Colonel Kevin McKiernan graduated from the University of Rhode Island in 1991 and earned his Master Degree from George Washington University in 1993. He entered the Army in 1994 as a enlisted Military Intelligence signal interceptor. In 1997 he completed Officer Candidate School and commissioned into the Military Intelligence branch of the U.S. Army. He served his lieutenant years in Baumholder, Germany as Infantry Battalion Assistant S-2, and Battalion S2. During this assignment he deployed for 9 months to Bosnia in support of Operation Joint Forge/Guard.
As a captain, he served as the Assistant S3 deploying in support of operations in Kosovo, Afghanistan, Colombia and Kuwait. He commanded Alpha Company, 224th MI BN, one of the Army’s first Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) equipped units during the liberation of Iraq in 2003-2004. Upon changing command he served at the Joint Multination Readiness Center (JMRC) in Hohenfels, Germany as a Observer Controller and as the Operations Group S2.
Upon leaving JMRC he was assigned to the 4th Battlefield Coordination Detachment (BCD) and while deployed to Qatar was responsible for coordinating Air Force ISR support for Army ground units in Iraq and Afghanistan. Later he was selected to attend the Naval War College for Intermediate Level Education (ILE) and completed training as an operational planner through the year long Maritime Advanced Warfighter Seminar (MAWS). His awards and decorations include: Bonze Star, Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal with 3 oak leaf cluster, Joint Service Achievement Medal, Army Achievement Award with 4 oak leaf cluster, Army Good Conduct Medal, NCO Professional Development Ribbon, and Oversea Service Ribbon with 5 oak leaf cluster.
Prior to his assignment to Princeton University he was stationed in Stuttgart, Germany where he served as the Senior Intelligence Analyst for East Africa. His hobbies include travel, baseball, and visiting national parks and historic sites.
LTC McKiernan is married to Michelle Franklin McKiernan from Morganton, North Carolina. Michelle is a school teacher working in early childhood education. They have a daughter Rebecca, 18, who is attending the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill.
