Many current Princeton traditions have their roots in student activities from long ago, stemming from athletic victories and other celebrations of campus life. Traditions bind the Princeton community together and nurture continuing engagement of alumni in the life of the University. They also launch students into their time at Princeton. One example is the Pre-rade, which was sparked by the popularity of the alumni P-rade. At the Pre-rade, freshmen kick off the academic year by processing from the chapel through FitzRandolph Gate after the Opening Exercises ceremony.
