TANF @ Ten: A Retrospective on Welfare Reform

October 6, 2006

It has been ten years since the passage of the Temporary Assistance for Needy Families Act (TANF), which changed this face of welfare as we know it. For this event, scholars, practitioners, and families whose lives have been impacted by welfare reform came together to discuss the changes TANF has wrought, and what the future of welfare should look like. Congressman Charles Rangel (D-NY) gave a special keynote address in which he set out some of the key priorities in social policy the next congress should address. In addition, Georgetown University's Peter Edelman, the Urban Institute's Olivia Golden, and Mathematica's Robert Wood presented specially commissioned research. Commentators included NYC's Deputy Mayor for Health and Human Services, Linda Gibbs, and New Jersey's new Commissioner of Human Services, Clarke Bruno.

An original documentary short on welfare in the region will be released at the conference, as well as a specially commissioned survey of public perceptions of poverty and public assistance.
