Leo Shaw awarded 2012 FEI Award for Excellence in Materials Characterization
PRISM is pleased to introduce the FEI Award for Excellence in Materials Characterization offered for the first time this year. The recipient is Leo Shaw, a senior in Chemical and Biological Engineering. In his senior thesis entitled “Synthesis and Characterization of Chlorine-Substituted Contorted Hexabenzocoronenes”, Leo synthesized and characterized contorted chlorinated hexabenzocoronenes (CI-HBCs) as alternatives to existing electron acceptors for organic electronics. In this work, he has employed a number of methods to characterize them extensively in order to understand their structures and properties. Prof. Lynn Loo, Leo’s thesis advisor, states “I have not encountered an undergraduate as dynamic and as enthusiastic as Leo. Leo is easily one of the best undergraduate researchers I have had the pleasure to work with in my ten years as a faculty member”.
The award is sponsored by the FEI Company.
