PRISM announces the 2009 Undergraduate and Graduate Newport Awards for Photonics for high scholastic achievement and high potential for leadership in the field of photonics, electro-optics or optoelectronic materials. The awards will be given to Abhishek Agrawal, a senior in the Department of Electrical Engineering, and Euan McLeod, a graduate student in Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering.
"Desert Butte" by Pat Watson, Mike Gaevski, Joe Palmer, Conrad Sylvestre (technical staff) of the PRISM micro/nanofabrication laboratory (MNFL) took second prize at the Princeton University "Art of Science" Competition. This is a scanning electron microscope image of an artifact created by a mask defect and found while characterizing a deep Indium Phosphide etch process using a new tool in the PRISM micro/nanofabrication laboratory.
Electrical Engineering Professor Jason Fleischer and his students Christopher Barsi and Wenjie Wan have developed a new type of imaging that could overcome limitations of current optics, such as the trade-off between magnification (zooming) and field of view.

The 2009 MSE Class had 18 students from Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering, and Electrical Engineering complete the certificate. The future plans of the students range from graduate work in materials science to work as a business consultant to studying patent law. Ashwin Atre received the Outstanding Materials Science and Engineering Student Award and Sharon Goswami received the Outstanding Leadership in Materials Award.
