Sam Cohen performs experimental and theoretical research in two areas: plasma propulsion of spacecraft and nuclear fusion in the field-reversed configuration. The spacecraft propulsion studies, carried out with national and international collaborations, aim at developing better propulsion methods to enable manned travel to remote planets. The fusion research focuses on the development of clean, safe, and small fusion power plants, ones suitable for a distributed (rather than central-station) electrical power system. Research facilities for both projects are at the Plasma Physics Laboratory, located on Forrestal Campus.
