Claire Gmachl

Eugene Higgins Professor of Electrical Engineering
Vice Dean, School of Engineering and Applied Science
Ph.D. 1995, Technical University of Vienna , Austria

Claire Gmachl is working on new quantum devices, especially lasers, and their optimization for systems application ranging from sensors to optical communications. The current focus is on Quantum Cascade lasers, i.e. semiconductor injection lasers based on electronic intersubband transitions. She develops high performance lasers for sensing of explosives and toxic chemicals and widely tunable lasers for optical sensors in environmental and medical applications. Her interests include also lasers for mid-infrared free-space optical wireless communication and some of its physical layer issues. She works on nonlinear optics in semiconductor quantum structures, and is interested in non-classical semiconductor light sources. Her expertise is in semiconductors and photonics.
