Richard B. Miles

Professor of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering
Ph.D. 1972, Stanford Universtiy
Prof. Miles works on the development new linear and nonlinear optical diagnostic technologies for the study of supersonic and hypersonic flow fields, plasmas, combusting gasses, remote threat detection, and nonequilibrium phenomena. This includes the design of specialized laser systems and imaging technologies that take advantage of atomic and molecular resonances. He also works on the use of microwaves, magnets, electron beams and lasers to drive and control aerodynamic phenomena for hypersonic vehicle research including new electron beam driven hypersonic wind tunnels, MHD power extraction for re-entry vehicles, MHD flow control, microwave and electron beam driven engine performance enhancement, and plasma steering and drag reduction.
