Researchers in Prof. Petta’s lab study coherent quantum mechanical phenomena in artificially structured nanometer-scale systems. Emphasis is on learning how to control quantum evolution in the solid-state and minimize sources of environmental decoherence. He is also interested in studying problems at the intersection of condensed matter physics and quantum optics. Experiments in this area focus on tailoring the solid-state environment to extend coherence times (cavity QED, Purcell effect).
